Whoever does not advance must retreat, and whoever does not retreat must advance.

I am Yoshida, president of Yamada Shusei Ltd., a professional apparel garment repair group in Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture.

「Whoever does not advance must retreat, and whoever does not retreat must advance.」

                           Fukuzawa Yukichi

These words are my impression after watching the new Project X aired on NHK on June 8.

The best way to learn more about the content is to actually watch the program, but here is NHK+'s commentary on the overview.

One in every 100 children suffers from congenital heart disease. One out of every 100 children with congenital heart disease has to have multiple heart surgeries. The “heart and blood vessel patch” was developed to fulfill the dream of saving patients by eliminating re-operations.

The people involved were a doctor who had lost his own child, a local factory that had survived in the textile industry, which was in decline, and a major manufacturer that offered cooperation in response to an SOS from a subcontractor.

This is a drama of life in which patients and their families joined forces to accomplish an extremely difficult development.

As someone in the textile industry, I was deeply moved by the way the company faced up to difficulties without giving up and finally fulfilled its dream, which gave me courage to face the future.

Especially in the area of fabric development, there was an episode of going back to what has been created before in order to create something that has never been seen before, and I witnessed a wonderful fusion of technological transmission and evolution/development in a town factory.

Furthermore, I was moved by the fact that, at the root of this, a chain of strong feelings of not wanting others to experience the loss, pain, suffering, and sorrow experienced in their own lives became a thick and strong pipe that transcended the barriers of position and organization.

Although our circumstances are different, as a business manager, I renewed my determination to “never retreat”.
